SUDAN: Dr Mudawi released from prison after eight months

Dr Mudawi, a Sudanese Human Rights defender, has been released from Prison after having been held on trumped up charges for eight months. Dr Mudawi was arrested earlier this year for ‘waging war against the state’ amongst other things. Dr Mudawi has worked tirelessly as a human rights defender in Sudan for many years, and as a result has been arrested numerous times. During his most recent imprisonment, Dr Mudawi was visited by Jan Figel, EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief outside of the EU. We are very encouraged by his release, and hope that this is the sign of a step forward for freedom of religion or belief and human rights in general in Sudan.
